Within 20 years four in every 10 homes will be occupied by someone living alone, Communities and Local Government research has predicted. Singletons will outnumber any other kind of household as the number of single person households will grow by 60 per cent by 2031 to reach 11 million homes. Those living alone will make up 10 per cent of the population, against 13 per cent now, married couple households will fall to 9.2 million, down 2 per cent; while the number of cohabitees will rise 74 per cent – up from 2.2 million to 3.8 million. Immigration will take the overall number of households in England up by 29 per cent to 27.8 million.
