One in five Lloyds’ home loans ‘toxic’

More than 20 per cent of home loans from Lloyds bank, Britain’s largest mortgage lender, have been included in the group’s ‘toxic assets’ and placed into the government’s insurance scheme designed to insulate the company from further house falls. Hundreds of thousands of mortgages worth £74 billion have been included in the £260 billion parcel of assets placed under the taxpayer protection scheme, which may increase the government’s stake in the bank to 77 per cent. Most of the toxic home loans have come from HBOS, which was taken over by Lloyds in January.
