House building facing an 88-year low

The number of new homes being built in England in 2009/10 could slump to its lowest level since 1921 with two-thirds of all new properties being supplied through housing associations, research from the National Housing Federation (NHF) has warned. The NHF predicts the number of new homes built next financial year will be half this year’s total – down to 70,000. It also argues that the latest forecast strengthens the case for a house building fiscal stimulus package such as the one it called for two weeks ago, where the government would fund 100,000 new affordable homes over the next two years.
